Cat Trapping

ACS insignia top

Whether you are trying to catch a feral cat to have them altered for Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) purposes or conversely, to surrender them, you will need to utilize a humane cat trap. Please be aware that all feral cats surrendered to the San Jose Animal Care Center are not suitable for adoption and will unfortunately be euthanized. Cats caught in traps must be treated humanely. For trapping instructions visit www.feralcat.com/trapinst.html or call our informational phone line at 408/578-7297 (PAWS) and listen for the “Feral Cat” prompt. For TNR purposes, please make sure you have a veterinary appointment scheduled for spay or neuter before trapping.

Once the cat is caught in the trap please follow the humane guidelines listed below.

1.

Do not leave the trap in direct sunlight.

2.

Do not leave the animal out in rain or cold. Cover the trap completely with a sheet or blanket and move to a protected area such as the garage, bathroom or laundry room.

3.

Take the cat in the covered trap to San Jose Animal Care & Services Spay/Neuter clinic to be spayed or neutered. Feral cats in traps do not need an appointment and can be dropped off between 8:00AM - 8:30AM. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.

4.

If you plan on surrendering the cat, please transport it immediately, in the trap to the City of San José Animal Care Center. If you are unable to transport the cat yourself you may call (408) 578-7297 to schedule a pick-up.

5.

Causing harm to or dumping the cat elsewhere is against the law!
