Creativity is power--celebrate it!
At the heart of our work in the Office of Cultural Affairs is a celebration of the creative diversity of San Jose. Over the Summer, we launched the #408Creates social media campaign in
partnership with a group of San Jose arts organizations, artists, and local businesses. Through this campaign, our goal is to highlight the range of creativity happening everyday in the South Bay.

We invite you to join us in celebrating San Jose’s creativity by tagging photos of your creations and creative experiences #408Creates on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Your tags will help showcase the uniqueness of this place where we live and work. It also helps us know what and how people are creating in San Jose, so that we can continue to develop programs that further strengthen the cultural vibrancy of the city.

In a related initiative, OCA is launching a series of programs under the banner San Jose Creates and Connects aimed at connecting residents across communities and within neighborhoods through creative, participatory experiences.

Our objectives through this program are to recognize, celebrate, and promote diverse creative experiences throughout San Jose, while building partnerships that enhance opportunities for residents’ own creative expression.

Examples of some initial projects include a citywide contest, in partnership with San Jose Public Library, to design the new library cards and a fleet of mobile chalkboards to collect information about how people are creating in San Jose, launched  at Viva Calle this year.

Upcoming projects include a neighborhood public art initiative in underpass locations though out the city and targeted support to place-based arts businesses. We are also working to celebrate Make Music Day in San Jose on June 21. Additional projects are under development to further support resident’s creative participation citywide.

San Jose Creates and Creates also supports the City of San Jose’s participation in Creating Connections, a national initiative to make arts and culture a recognized, valued, and expected part of everyday life.
